Graphing Philosophy

I’ve been meaning to share this for about a month or so now. I came across this graph of various philosophers with links between each one representing the influences based of wikipedia results. The size of each node on the graph is determined by the number of influences (lines) connecting it to other nodes.

If your interested you can find some christian philosophers (Calvin, Van Til, Schaffer) near the middle right of the graph.

Printing food at home?

3D printers have started to get to the stage of been more affordable over the years, especially with printers like the reprap and makerbot. These are already great for rapid prototyping and printing parts but what happens when you start pushing the limits of these machines?

Meet the Imagine 3D Printer which instead of printing out hot plastic, prints food.

Normal 3D printer work my pushing plastic through a hot nozzle onto a platform to form a layer of the desired object then printing consecutive layers ontop of each other to form a 3D object. Replace the plastic with any soft kind of food and the nozzle with a syringe any you pretty much have the Imagine 3D Printer. Here are some examples of what is is capable of:

It’s a good concept however it’s a long way off been ready for example I’m still not exactly sure what the prints shown above are meant to represent, I’m assuming the first is a box but the other is anyones guess. Anyway I’ll let you guess decide if it’s worth the $1,995 price tag.

Dead Kindle – Part 2

Last week after the death of my kindle (Part 1) I ended up ringing amazon’s customer service (more accurately entered my phone number on a form online and got an phone call from them instantly) to see what they could do about my dead kindle. After describing my kindle and what I had done to troubleshoot it I was told there was nothing that they could do since it was out of warranty however I was offered a new kindle at a discounted price (about 15% off). After contemplating this for a day or (and playing around with dick simith’s display models) so I got amazon to call me and put an order though for a new kindle touch 3g. So while I wait it to arrive what better thing to do then take apart my broken kindle.

upon observation I have a idea why my kindle isn’t working…

through a small hole I see what looks like a small crack in the eink display, disassembling further…

and that small crack is actually a large crack. Somehow between the travel to and from university my kindle has been bumped too hard and the eink display has broken.

The Acts of the Holy Spirit

I love infographics. They are such an excellent way to display information in way that is both easy to understand and accesible. So it comes as no surprise that as a christian and geek I love this infographic on the the acts of the Holy Spirit. The infographic is made by Andre Parker over at the good book, where there are also similar infographics on King David’s rise to power and a timeline of 1 & 2 Kings.

Dead Kindle – Part 1

So a few days ago I bought a book on amazon, pickup my kindle and press the power button to download the book and an greeted with this.

Yep my Kindle has succumb to the end of it’s life after 1 year 9 months of use, conveniently that 9 months out of the warranty period. I still regard the purchase of my kindle one of the best purchases I have ever made however I was hoping to get a lot more use out of it. Now off to contact Amazon and see if there is anything they can do with it been out of warranty.

Chemical Reactions

One of the funnest things for I’m guessing most people who did science in high school is watching/performing chemical reactions. However generally the ones you get to do are, let face it, pretty tame. Periodic Videos is a chemistry channel on youtube where they go filming various videos on certain elements/chemical reactions. Today they started to release short ‘Reaction Only’ videos that are worth a look, here are some of my favourites they have released so far.
